Scrabbled "Plough Through the Rust" LP
From our friends at Wormwood Grasshopper in Hobart, Australia:
“Plough Through the Rust” is Meanjin/Brisbane group Scrabbled’s follow up to their excellent debut ‘Welcome to Pig City’ (Virtual Cool CS 2014).
The DIY ramshackle energy we know and love from the group is present and familiar, as is the dry wit and authenticity (a word I’m nervous in using, but if the shoe fits), however Plough Through the Rust often sees the group’s songwriting taking a more introspective and personal path. Whereas Pig City was sonically expansive (and three songs here are drawn from those sessions), Rust often draws things closer, finding the charm within the scaled back honesty and rawness.
"Like Velvet Underground if they had been subject to the unrelenting heat, everyday abuse and suburban sprawl of heartland Australia." - Everett True.
For those unfamiliar with the group, here we see two main incarnations of the band:
Scrabbled III: Bek Moore (Above Ground Pool / Clag), Dusty Anastassiou (Dag), Mark Spinks (Gravel Samwidge), Skye McNicol (Bent) and Greg Hilliard (Papa Lord God / Lost Domain / Invisible Empire).
Scrabbled II: Bek, Dusty, Mark, Jason Bright (Dragster), Conwae Burrell (Extrafoxx), Emily Wade, Tim Green (Cyclone Trio) and Max Fowler-Roy (Dairy Queen). Version two is the core band heard on Welcome to Pig City, and as anyone who saw Scrabbled live will remember, guest musicians and lineup alterations were a regular occurrence.
Unfortunately, both Bek and Greg are no longer with us, however these recordings provide one (of many) ways their memory and spirit lives on. - WG
